WISE Meeting 2016 CNR-ISMAR Venezia, 22-26 maggio, 2016
The WISE Meeting 2016 will be held at the Institute of Marine Sciences of the Italian National Research Council (CNR-ISMAR), located in Venice, Italy. The local organizer/reference person is Dr. Luigi Cavaleri.
Saturday 07 May 2016
Since 1983, the WISE meeting as a follow-up of the WAM Meeting represents a reference for the physical oceanography scientific community to present and discuss the latest techniques in wave physics, modelling, applications and measurements.
Wind waves are the key information for navigation safety and the design of offshore and coastal structures. Wave forecasts provide some of the most appreciated information by professional and amatorial sea users. Still after 70 years of attention and dedicated work, wind waves offer new insights and generalization, both as a self-standing phenomenon, as for the interaction with the atmosphere that, for all the implied physics, we have just begun to explore and to consider in our approach to the problem. It is now fully recognized that wind waves play a key role in all the exchanges between the ocean and the atmosphere, in so doing affecting not only the short- and medium-term weather forecast, but also the long-term climate. It is often repeated that what had to be found has been found. It is our conviction that a much broader horizon is still waiting to be uncovered, the key for this being our fantasy and the capability to read what nature puts in front of us.
WISE is focused on deepening both theoretical and practical aspects of the processes involved and improving the related numerics. Without any written proceedings, but based only on direct oral presentation of the latest results, it avoids any formalism connected to the way the results are passed to the audience. Its declared purpose is to work as a community, aimed at improving the performance and the scientific background of the wave models then used throughout the world for both scientific and engineering purposes. During the last three decades the WISE community, together the with previous WAM group, has produced practically all the basic results that form the backbone of the present widely used wave models.
The 2016 meeting will be held on May 22-26, Sunday to Thursday, with the usual timetable. It will start with an ice-breaker on Sunday afternoon, followed by lectures during the four subsequent days. In addition, a field trip is planned for Tuesday afternoon. The official dinner will be held on Wednesday night. Any change of this schedule will be notified via this webpage. Both oral and poster sessions are planned.
The CNR-ISMAR premises are located in the heart of the town, inside the original shipyard of the Venetian Republic. The local environment, covering all the fields of oceanography, will give ample chance to the participants to interact with the other scientists of the local Institute.
Detailed information about the meeting and its logistical aspects will be made available on this page in due time.
The registration fee at the WISE Meeting has always been kept very low. For this year we plan to keep it between 160 and 200 Euro, according to local arrangements conditions. A fee of 110-150 Euro will be required for any accompanying non-participant person.
Participants are encouraged to freely present and discuss their latest results, with an active interaction with, and discussion of, all the ones presented at the meeting.
The WISE Meeting is organized with the financial support of ONRG (Office of Naval Research Global).

Venue
The WISE Meeting 2016 will be held at the Institute of Marine Sciences of the Italian National Research Council (CNR-ISMAR), located in Venice, Italy.
Address:
Tesa 104 – Arsenale, Castello 2737/F, 30122 Venezia, Italy
Getting here:
Venice is connected to the mainland (Venezia Mestre) by the Ponte della Libertà, 4 km long, on which road vehicles and trains travel to the lagoon. The bridge leads to the Cruise Terminal, to the Tronchetto and Piazzale Roma terminals and to the Railway Station. Vehicles cannot pass beyond these terminals, so those arriving by car must park and those arriving by train must alight at Venezia Saint Lucia.
By car:
When you drive to Venice and park your car at Piazzale Roma, it is possible within walking distance to reach Actv landing stages for the main public transport waterbus routes.
Parking places here are limited and expensive, but other car parking facilities are available on the mainland and are linked with the city through public transport.
Check availability and rates from VeneziaUnica website by clicking on "PARKING".
From Piazzale Roma, take the boat (line 5.2 at the waterbus stop located in front of the Railway Station) and stop at BACINI. For the water bus service timetable please refer to the following link.
Hence walk according to the paths given in the map.
The entrance of the Institute of Marine Sciences is located at Tesa 104 (“Tesa” is the name of the single attached building where ships were originally built).
By train:
If you arrive by train, at the railway station of Venezia Santa Lucia, take the boat (line 5.2 just in front of the railway station) and stop at BACINI. For the water bus service timetable please refer to the following link.
Hence walk according to the paths given in the map.
The entrance of the Institute of Marine Sciences is located at Tesa 104 (“Tesa” is the name of the single attached building where ships were originally built).
By air:
If you are arriving at “Marco Polo” airport, located in Tessera (Venice mainland) take:
- the ALILAGUNA lines (public waterbus transportation) according to your destination. You can buy your tickets at the ticket offices located a) in the arrival hall; b) just in front of the waterbus stop or c) on board, with an additional fare of 1 EUR;
- the ACTV AERObus n. 5 to Piazzale Roma (20 minutes’ ride);
- the ATVO airport bus to Piazzale Roma (20 minutes’ ride);
- the car taxi (approximately 20 minutes’ ride);
- the boat taxi (approximately 90,00-100,00 EUR, 30-40 minutes’ ride).
If you are arriving at “Canova” airport, near Treviso, catch the ATVO bus-express (1 hour ride) to Piazzale Roma.
Tickets
An ordinary ticket for the in town navigation service costs 7,50 EUR and you can travel on any route (except Alilaguna lines, ACTV routes n. 16, 19, 21 and Casino) with route changes in the same direction, for 75 minutes from the moment of ticket validation.
You can buy conveniently-priced tourist tickets for trips with a minimum length of 24 hours to a maximum of 7 days. Another convenient solution is to buy “Carta Venezia” (Venice card) at the ACTV (boat ticket) office located in Piazzale Roma (this service is available only here and requires to provide a valid identity document). The cost is of 50,00 EUR and allows to buy tickets at the local reduced fare (1,50 EUR per ride). The card lasts for 5 years.
