Cantoni Carolina

She has done research work mainly on nitrogen cycle in coastal environments (Gulf of Trieste) and open sea (Western and Eastern Mediterranean, Cretan Sea), in the framework of several European and national projects. She used nitrogen isotopes (15N) techniques to study nitrogen assimilation (NO3, NO2, NH4, urea) and nitrogen fixation in marine plankton. She studied the biogeochemistry of nitrogen isotopes (δ15N) in marine POM to asses origins and fate of nitrogen in open Mediterranean sea.
Currently her research is focused on biogeochemistry of carbonate system in the Adriatic sea and in the Gulf of Trieste, with special emphasis on air-sea CO2 fluxes and ocean acidification issues.

• She contributed to several EU founded projects (Interreg II, ADIOS, EMMA, NETWET 2, SESAME) and to Italian national projects (PIED – PNRA, ASI/NORBAL, ANOCSIA, SEAROWS – PNRA, VECTOR).
• She participated to scientific cruises in the Adriatic sea, in the Mediterranean sea and to daily cruises on board of Italian and Greek minor research vessels.
• She developed analytical protocols for δ15N and δ13C measures in POM and for TA determination in seawater.
• Member of “Associazione Italiana di Oceanologia e Limnologia” (AIOL);
• She participated to an advanced course on “Best practices in ocean acidification research” at IFM-GEOMAR (Kiel, Germany, 2010) and to four advanced courses at “Abdus Salam - International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste” (2000-2009) on impacts of global change and land use change on marine biogeochemistry.

Author or co-author of 14 papers (10 in ISI journals), 12 technical and project reports, 2 chapters in Italian books and more than 40 studies presented at national and international conferences.
