Her main interests are in the field of marine ecotoxicology. Her research activity is mainly focused on the assessment of biological responses of marine organisms to various environmental stressors. Negative effects on organism health may result from anthropogenic activities as well as from fluctuation of natural parameters. In this framework, she is particularly interested in the evaluation of the effects of both natural (temperature, salinity, pH, tide) and anthropogenic (pollution, fishing) stressors on physiological and histochemical biomarkers detected on marine bivalves.
The main investigated biomarkers include histochemical determinations of lipofuscins, neutral lipids, lysosomal structurale changes on bivalve hepatopancreas and their quantification through image analysis systems; qualitative and quantitative histology; histochemical and cytochemical determination of lysosomal membrane stability; determination of the gross biochemical composition (protein, lipid, carbohydrate and glycogen contents); determination of physiological parameters (filtration rate, respiration rate, assimilation efficiency, excretion rate and Scope for Growth).
