Katrin Schroeder major research interests are experimental studies in physical oceanography, mainly of the deep waters in the Mediterranean Sea. In particular, her research is focused on (a) dynamic processes influencing the water mass characteristics and distribution, (b) interannual variability of the physical and biogeochemical properties of mediterranean water masses, (c) mass, salt, heat and nutrient exchanges through the channels of Sicily and Corsica, (d) the propagation of perturbations from the eastern to the western Mediterranean and their influence on dense water formation processes, the driving force of the mediterraenan thermohaline circulation.
- Participated to 13 scientific cruises between 2005 and 2010 on vessels owned by the CNR (RV URANIA), the Hydrographic Institute of the Italian Navy (RV ARETUSA) and the NATO Undersea Research Centre-NURC (NRV ALLIANCE) in wide parts of the western and eastern Mediterranean Sea.
- Task Team Leader of the HYMEX Group “Sounding the ocean – Circulation”
- Involved in a series of national and international research projects as MEDCLIVAR “Mediterranean CLImate VARiability and Predictability”, HyMeX “HYdrological cycle in the Mediterranean Experiment”, PERSEUS “Policy-oriented marine Environmental Research in the Southern EUropean Seas ", EUROFLEETS “Towards an Alliance of European Research Fleets”, TOSCA “Tracking Oil Spills and Coastal Awareness network”, JERICO “Towards a joint European Research Infrastructure Network for coastal observatories”.
