INTERESTS

Carlo Mantovani collaborates with the Physical Oceanography group in Lerici led by Annalisa Griffa and he is responsible for the CNR-ISNAR High Frequency (HF) Radar infrastructure.

Currently his main interest and activity are the management and the development of the HF Radar infrastructure for ocean current measurements within national and European projects focused on environmental issues (oil spill mitigation, connectivity between marine protected areas, fisheries management), including data delivery in standard and interoperable format.

He is member of Eurogoos HF Radar Task Team and has coordination roles in several tasks of national and European research projects.

ACTIVITY

Ongoing projects and tasks are detailed below:

IMPACT - Port Impact on Protected Marine Areas: Cooperative Cross-Border Actions: member of the coordination team of the project and responsible for the upgrade and improvement of the CNR-ISMAR HF radar infrastructure in the Ligurian -Thyrrenian Sea;

CMEMS INSTAC Task 6.1 SYSTEM EVOLUTION AND IMPLEMENTATION: HF Radars products. Coordinator for integration of near real time Total and Radial velocities of surface current into the Copernicus Marine Service Insitu Tematic Assembling Center (INSTAC) catalog. Contributor for integration of reprocessed data in the same framework.

Sicomar Plus - Cross-border system for marine safety against the risks of navigation and for the preservation of the marine environment: responsible for the upgrade and improvement of the CNR-ISMAR HF radar infrastructure in the Ligurian -Thyrrenian Sea;

Jerico-Next - Joint European Research Infrastructure network for Coastal Observatory – Novel European eXpertise for coastal observaTories: contribution to the definition of an interoperable European common data model for data and metadata, contribution to the definition of best practices for Quality Assessment and Quality Control for HF radar derived surfaced currents.

SeaDataCloud - Further developing the pan-European infrastructure for marine and ocean data management: contribution to the definition of HF radar derived surfaced currents common data model and data index for ingestion in SeaDataCloud data management system

In the past Carlo Mantovani has been contributing, within the INFM group for science communication “INForMando” based in Parma, to several projects in the field of science communication and education, as author of educational web games and animations, scientific exhibits and exhibitions, educational laboratories, gaining expertise on computer science and multimedia programming software and languages. He has been also manager of the INForMando web portal and IT infrastructure and coordinator of several tasks and projects:

  • project manager of ParmaScienza 2010 (http://www.parmascienza.it/2010/parmascienza/) and ParmaScienzaLab 2012 (http://www.parmascienza.it) science festivals;
  • coordination support of the EU project ESCIENTIAL I.E. – the European Science Festival. Itinerant Exhibitions (FP7, Science and Society 13, 2006);
  • coordination support of the EU project ESCIENTIAL – the European Science Festival (FP6, SSA for Science and Technology Week 2004).

He has implemented, between 2001 and 2004, the video archive and the website of the INFM National Schools, obtaining a good expertise on video streaming technologies and digital video recording and editing.
