INTERESTS

Luigi Vigliotti works on paleomagnetism and rock-magnetism since his university studies. His main field of interest was classical paleomagnetism, he acquainted and improved his experience through fellowships at the University of Columbia and Berkeley. Research subjects include geodynamic, structural geology and magnetostratigraphy applied to plates and microplates rotation with key target on the rotation of the Sardo-Corso block. In 1989 he partecipated as paleomagnetist to the leg 127 of the ODP in the Japan Sea and in 1994 to the Xth italian expedition to Antarctica.

After his met with Frank Oldfield he moved his interests on “environmental magnetism” with application on paleoclimatic reconstruction and diagenetic effects in sub-oxic/anoxic environments. Presently he is involved in studies on the secular variation of the Earth magnetic field and on the magnetic properties of marine and lacustrine sediments, and of volcanoclastic deposits aimed to: (a) datings of sedimentary sequences deposited during the Late Pleistocene/Holocene;  (b) magnetic characterization of marine sediments in relation to changing depositional environments, transportation modes and provenance sources; (c) paleoclimatic reconstructions of late Quaternary glacial/interglacial cycles; (d) environmental monitoring and anthropic impact.

ACTIVITY
  • Responsible of the Paleomagnetic Laboratory at ISMAR since 1985.
  • Involved in several european (Paliclas, Bigsets, Eurodelta, Promess, Nearest) and national projects (Sinapsi, MURST, MIUR, GNV).
  • Co-conveners of the Symposium: ”Magnetic signature in sedimentary environments”,  XXV EGS, Nice, 25-29 Aprile 2000.
  • Evaluator for the european community in the framework of the VII° PQ (Climate dynamics and abrupt changes – analysis of the palaeo-record)
  • Membership (2001-2002) of the international committee of the project “Calypso” in the framework of the europen project “Improving the human potential; transnational access to research infrastructures”.
  • National vice-delegate and member of the National Committee for the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA) and coordinator of the Division I (Internal Magnetic Field) of IAGA-Italy.
PUBLICATIONS

Authors of 30 scientific publications on journals and international books (JRC), 15 on national journals. He has presented 25 researches in international meetings and partecipated to several international workshops (ODP, ELDP, ICDP). Reviewer of scientific articles for fron-line journals. Author of divulgative articles  published in magazines and newspapers. He has supervised two PhD thesis and six graduating thesis in Geological Sciences.
