Summary:

Recent and expected advances in space-borne Remote Sensing technology broaden the perspectives of monitoring toward the identification and quantification of plankton groups. The CYAN IS-WAS project will evaluate the possibility to assess the presence of cyanobacteria during bloom conditions from satellite, considering that their characteristic reflectance spectra can be detected and recognized by hyperspectral sensors. This requires detailed knowledge about optical properties of cyanobacterial blooms.

The possibility to share Italian and Swedish experiences in cal/val field surveys, remote data analysis and hyperspectral images data-set will contribute the build-up of innovative methodologies, able to provide more accurate Earth Observation (EO) products. Such EO products can be useful for the management of aquatic environments and as a support for emergency warning.
