Fishing threatens Antarctic Fishes
TV interview with Marino Vacchi (ISPRA c/o ISMAR CNR Genova)
Wednesday 12 June 2013
Overfishing is depleting Antarctic fish populations with implications for whole ecosystem. International initiatives for their conservation are in progress.
Antarctic fishes are a group of species highly specialized to live in extreme environment, where the sea water temperature is below 0°C. They play a central important ecological role within the ecosystems. Several species are commercially exploited by several countries. The increasing fishing activity has already produced signs of depletion on fish stocks. International initiatives for fish conservation have been undertaken in order to create large Marine Protected Areas.
