London Olympics: ISAC e ISMAR (CNR) for sailing races

CNR Institutes ISMAR and ISAC are participating in an initiative promoted by the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV), to provide advanced marine weather forecasts to the Italian boats engaged on sailing races in London in 2012.

The forecasts will be provided daily to athletes as an aid in decision-making before and during the races taking place at Weymouth, according to the winds and ocean currents that will be monitored and planned in great detail (http://www .federvela.it/londra2012/meteo).

The partners involved in this initiative are:

  • CNR-ISAC: providing high resolution daily forecasts of wind-data on the race courses at Weymouth, made with their own weather models, BOLAM and MOLOCH, operated at ISAC Bologna http://www.isac.cnr.it/dinamica / projects / forecasts /.
  • CNR-ISMAR: providing forecasts of ocean currents in the stretched area of the event, through its marine model SHYFEM, which also uses the input data provided by ISAC, and operates at ISMAR Venice (similar to what is done in the project KASSANDRA http://www.ismar.cnr.it/kassandra).
  • DICCA (Department of Civil Engineering and Environmental Chemistry), University of Genoa: the provision of high resolution wind fields with the WINDS model (which uses input data from ISAC) and statistical study of the wind during the races.
  • ARPAL Liguria Region: coordination, collecting and providing meteorological data, processing satellite images, weather service.

The activity started in April this year and is undergoing further testing and refinement. The FIV showed remarkable appreciation of the supplied products, which have already been used successfully in pre-Olympic competitions.
