WASS

WASS is a remote sensor for measuring space-time fields of sea surface elevations. It consists of a stereo-pair of high-resolution digital cameras that observing the sea surface from two distinct points of view allow recovering the 3-D shape of the observing scene. Output is a sequence of 3-D wave fields with accuracy of about 2-3 cm (for an installation height of 12 m). The present WASS encompasses an auto-calibration method to recover the stereo-camera pose and a dense stereo matching algorithm. WASS operates on fixed platforms and moving structures coupled with a (optional) motion reference unit. Research with WASS is conducted in partnership with DAIS – “Università Ca' Foscari” (Venice) and it is supported by the Flagship Project RITMARE - The Italian Research for the Sea – coordinated by the Italian National Research Council (CNR) and funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) within the National Research Program 2011–2015.
