Summary: Italian fishing industry goes through a deep structural crisis for several years. The cause is due to the combined effect of several factors, including the over-exploitation of the main fish stocks, the obsolescence of the vessels and the shortcomings of the storage, processing and marketing. The regions of Southern Italy, especially Sicily and Apulia, are strongly dependent on fishing activities in terms of socio-economic development. In this context, the SSD PESCA project aims to develop and implement technologies, tools and systems in order to promote a responsible governance of the fisheries in Southern Italy, which allows to combine profitability and eco-sustainability. Activities planned in the following work packages:

• W.P.1. Implementation and integration of marine observing systems for the sustainable management of fishing effort;

• W.P.2. Development of environmental indicators and modeling for the optimization and sustainable management of fishing effort;

• W.P.3. Development of multi-funcion devices supporting the fishing activities;

• W.P.4. Design and implementation of Regional Operational Data Centers supporting fisheries management.

• W.P.5. HF coastal radar network for monitoring sea areas of critical importance for fishing.

• W.P.6. Dissemination of results, technology transfer and training of young researchers, technologists and end-users regarding the development and use of products useful optimization and management of fishing effort.
