Research scientist at the National Research Council since 1990, now senior scientist at the Institute of Marine Sciences in Bologna. His research work has dealt with deep-sea tectonics and sedimentary depositional systems of the central Mediterranean. He was involved as coordinator of the seafloor bathymetric and geophysical mapping of the Tyrrhenian Sea. He has been and is now working on submarine volcanic processes, including the study of modern shallow-water hydrothermal deposits and the broad relationships between eruptive styles and submerged volcanic landforms, leading to the development of geodynamic models for the Quaternary evolution of the Tyrrhenian subduction system. His work has had a common theme involving the recognition and study of the natural hazards posed by the geological processes at work in the marine environment.
He has written more than 35 scientific paper in ISI journals and numerous out-reach articles and interviews in popular scientific news sites. He was chief editor of “From Seafloor to Deep Mantle: Architecture of the Tyrrhenian Backarc Basin” (Memorie Descrittive della Carta Geologica d'Italia, volume LXIV, 2004), a collection of the most recent research results concerning the Tyrrhenian –Apeninne system.
