Regional mapping of the land displacement rates, i.e., land subsidence and uplift, from 1992 to 2002

Map of the vertical displacement rates (mm/yr) in the Venetian region over the decade 1992-2002

The map, never previously obtained at this scale (the entire Venice territory), has pointed out the significant spatial variability of the ground vertical movements, both at regional and local scales, with velocities ranging from a slight (1-2 mm/yr) uplift to a significant subsidence of more than 10 mm/yr. This map has been carried out by developing the “Subsidence Integrated Monitoring System” (SIMS) that efficiently merges the different displacement measurements obtained by SAR-based interferometry, spirit levelling, differential and continuous GPS.
