FP7 - COCONET project

Programme:  FP7

Project title: Towards Coast to Coast NETworks of marine protected areas (from the shore to the high and deep sea), coupled with sea-based wind energy potential.

Duration: 2011-2014

Total budget: € 9.000.000

Web site: http://www.coconet-fp7.eu/

Summary:

The main object of this project is the collation, analysis and integration of current information to design Marine Protected Areas networks by adopting a holistic approach, coupling environmental protection and clean energy production as an important challenge for the Mediterranean and Black Seas, providing an opportunity for exploring new ecological cost-benefit methods such as those proposed by the Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) study.

The foreseen Pilot Projects  represent the practical test of the principles developed during the initial part of the project, and will allow to refine them. The Pilot Projects aim to describe the ecological structure of whole areas as a single ecosystem and to ascertain the inter-connectivity within their boundaries, based on shared biodiversity features at different scales (community, population, species, genes).
