Summary: MUSES explores opportunities for Multi-Use in European Seas across five EU sea basins (Baltic Sea, North Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea and Eastern Atlantic). MUSES has the following objectives: (1) to explore the opportunities for Multi-Use in European Seas, including the scope for innovation and Blue Growth potential, (2) to present practical solutions on how to overcome existing barriers and minimize risks associated with Multi-Use development whilst maximising local benefits, (3) to provide an understanding of environmental, spatial, socio-economic benefits of co-location and (4) to highlight inappropriate regulatory, operational, environmental, H&S, societal and legal aspects.
MUSES is composed by five WP, among them the most important are: (WP2) Sea basin analysis of multi-use potentials, (WP3) analysis of multi-use potentials among thematic case studies through local stakeholder involvement and (WP4) development of an action plan to ascertain the real opportunities and barriers in European Seas, with focus on innovation and Blue Growth potentials. The action plan will be developed actively with stakeholders.
CNR-ISMAR is task leader for the Mediterranean sea-basin and will coordinate the analysis of multi-use potentials and barriers on med-scale. Moreover CNR-ISMAR is responsible for a case study in the Northern Adriatic on Coastal and Maritime Tourism as a driver/booster for potential multi-use along the coasts of Emilia-Romagna and Veneto Region. In specific, the case study aims to example “soft/distributed Multi-uses”, by maximizing coexistence and synergies among typical uses of the area (small scale/artisanal fishery, aquaculture, marine protected areas, oil and gas exploitation) that can contribute to sustainable tourism development. Special focus will be given to the aquaculture sector as an important activity for Blue Growth in the area and its relation to conflicts with tourism and other uses. Alternative scenarios will be developed to address coexistence and mutual benefit from tourism by re-allocating existing aquaculture sites to minimize conflicts/barriers and maximize synergies with tourism.
