Multidecadal time series from ocean and coastal environments
Climate studies at ISMAR focus on the Mediterranean Sea, particularly the seas around Italy, and involve several subjects, such as the interactions between atmosphere, ocean and the ecosystem in the lagoon, coastal and deep sea environments; the evolution of sediment depositions in coastal areas; the evolution of relative sea level; the variability of water transport through straits.
Time series are key elements in the studies on climate variability. ISMAR holds data series of atmospheric and marine parameters, concerning both the water column and the sea floor. Most of them are continuously updated by means of coastal and offshore automatic stations and during ocean surveys. The longest time series span from several decades up to more than a century and are mostly relative to the north Adriatic region. The variability of local parameters is also studied in connection with large-scale climate indicators.
